Earth Hour - This Friday, Fourth Period
This Friday, March 26th will be RWA's version of Earth Hour. During 4th period, we are asking all staff and students to turn off the lights and electric devices in the school to raise awareness on the challenge posed by our energy carbon footprint. This small gesture could help curb our global emission and remind us that energy efficiency is important and that renewable sources of energy need to be found to replace polluting ones. Thank you for your involvement!

La Nuit Verte: Meeting for all Artists on Thursday, January 21st, 2009

Click here to complete the Artist Statement due February 8th, 2010.

On the occasion of Earth Day 2010, Royal West Academy’s Environment Committee will be holding its second annual environmentally-friendly cultural night.

Coined “La Nuit Verte”, having been inspired in part by Montreal’s annual “nuit blanche”, this event will feature drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography, film, spoken-word poetry and even music... with an environmental edge, of course!

This year's theme is "water: past, present and future". To start your art piece, you'll have to come up with a specific message you'd like to get across to your audience. Need some guidance? Think about what water means to you, about how we as humans used, use and will use water, about its importance to nature, about the pollution of our water resources as a result of chemicals used on farms, certain industries and sewage systems. You could also consider the powerful nature of water (how it forms tsunamis and floods), about the fauna and aquatic flora that live in the Earth's bodies of water, about the state and availability of fresh water over time and about how thousands across the world lack access to clean water at this moment. Choose a particular perspective you'd like to examine and portray in a creative way!

Next, complete the Artist Statement form (click here). Write up a small description of what you plan to do. Submit this by February 8th, 2010, at the latest. Additionally, think about the materials you want to use to make the piece of art and make them as environmentally-friendly as possible. You could reuse plastic water bottles, bottle caps, cans, magazine scraps (for a collage, for instance). You could also use environmentally-friendly paints, paper and canvases!

Finally, once your idea has been approved, get to work on your project! You will have to submit regular updates on your progress, so get some of it done during March Break! Make sure to have fun and be creative!

La Nuit Verte: Mid-Production Update due March 15th, 2010
Written by Michael Wrobel

Click here for the Mid-Production Update Online Form

If the inbox is full and you get an error message at the end of the submission process, please try to re-submit the form using this alternate link.

Hello, Royal West Academy artists, musicians, producers and poets!

Hopefully you have begun your art piece for this year's environmentally-friendly cultural night, La Nuit Verte, which will be held on Earth Day (April 22nd)! If not, make sure to take advantage of the March Break to get going on it.

The Mid-Production Update form will soon be available online, and all groups of participants must fill out the form before March 15th. This time, only one person per group needs to submit the form, but make sure to include the names of ALL of your group members in the appropriate field. Discuss the progress you've made on your art piece in a few lines (4-5 sentences) and briefly explain what's left to do. If you haven't started yet, please specify how you plan to complete the project before the April 1st deadline in the appropriate text box.

The deadline for the art piece is April 1st, and all pieces must be submitted at that time to a member of the Environment Committee. No submissions will be accepted after the first week of April.

Thank you and have a great March Break! Enjoy!

Going Viral about Copenhagen

An Open Letter to the Right Honourable Stephen Harper

Dear Prime Minister:

Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most pressing issues of our time. As secondary students at Montreal’s Royal West Academy, and as the members of tomorrow’s electorate, we feel that our government should hear our united voice on climate change and take action on this global issue for our generation and all future generations.

Climate change transcends borders and doesn’t discriminate between rich or poor; quite to the contrary, all of humanity is threatened by the significant environmental impacts of climate change. Aside from warming temperatures, resulting in the loss of our planet’s beautiful and purposeful biodiversity, climate change poses a direct threat to our society, our economy, our food security and even the political stability of the world.

The melting of the polar ice caps is causing the rise of sea levels globally. Changing climatic systems are resulting in extreme weather, including floods and droughts where there previously were none. In the future, entire regions may see a significant reduction in their agricultural outputs; others may see their clean water sources disappear.

But it is not too late to take action. In a concerted, international effort, humanity can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change once and for all.

We only have a short period in which to do so; leading scientists in the field suggest that the point-of-no-return may be as little as 10 years away. Additionally, many scientists contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agree that a 50% reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions is necessary to allow our climate to re-stabilize.

The youth of this country is taking a stand; we believe the time is right to make a firm commitment to the environment. With the Kyoto Protocol’s term been almost up, we urge you to take immediate action on climate change with other world leaders. A new climate plan must be agreed upon at the very first opportunity, and we ask that you and other world leaders meeting in Copenhagen ratify new, binding environmental targets this December.

We have all of the tools we need to curb climate change. Let’s not wait to tomorrow to resolve what can be resolved today.
